Just counted the leftover deck boards from my project and it came out to exactly 17
I was cleaning up after finishing the new back deck and realized I had planned the cuts so well that I only had 17 boards left. That's a lot less waste than I expected. Anyone else have a small win like that with material planning?

Seventeen leftover boards sounds like a lot of material to me. That's nearly enough to build a small bench or a set of planters. On my last shed project, I got it down to just three partial sheets of plywood as scrap. I always try to plan cuts to use up full lengths first, because leftover full boards are often too short for the next job and just end up stored forever.

Honestly that's a solid result. I always lay everything out on the ground first and mark the cuts with chalk. It's a pain but it saved me from buying a whole extra bundle of composite last time.
