Had a neighbor show me a paint trick that saved my bathroom remodel

I was redoing my half bath last month when my 70 year old neighbor Bob walked over and saw me struggling with brush marks on the trim. He said "you're working the paint too much, just lay it on and leave it alone" then showed me how to use a damp sponge to smooth it out instead. Has anyone else gotten simple advice from an older neighbor that completely changed how you do a basic project?

Bob's trick works because you're basically letting gravity do the hard part. The damp sponge keeps the paint from drying too fast and creating those ridges, just gotta make sure your sponge is barely damp not wet. I started doing that after a painter friend told me the same thing and it cut half the time off my trim work.

My grandpa showed me how to fix a squeaky hinge with a Q-tip.
