A neighbor's comment about my deck stain job saved my next project

After I stained my deck last summer, a neighbor who used to be a painter said, 'You're putting it on way too thick, it's going to peel in a year.' He was right. I checked a few months later and it was already starting to flake in spots. For my fence project this spring, I switched to a stain pad instead of a roller and did two thin coats, waiting a full 24 hours between them. The difference is huge; it went on evenly and dried properly. Has anyone else had a pro tip completely change your method for a common task?

My uncle, a carpenter for like 40 years, watched me paint a door once and just said "you're not sanding between coats, are you." I was just slapping on more paint. He made me sand it down with 220 grit paper and do it right. The finish went from looking lumpy to completely smooth, like glass. I do it on everything now, even little trim pieces. That one tip changed my whole approach.

Yeah, that's a solid tip from your uncle, @williamo27.
