The torch trick for stubborn old tar patches finally worked for me
Last fall in Cleveland I spent a whole weekend fighting an old tar patch that kept crumbling every time I tried to fill it. I tried cold patch, hot mix, even that rubberized stuff, nothing would stick because the old surface was so greasy and worn. Then my buddy who pours driveways for a living told me to hit it with a propane torch for a minute before laying new material. That softened the old tar just enough to bond with the new patch, and it has held through six months of snow and salt. Has anyone else used heat to prep a repair, or do you just scrape and hope for the best?

wait, six months of Ohio winter and salt and it's still holding? that's actually impressive, but i gotta ask, did you resurface the whole patch area or just the crack line? because i've seen guys torch driveways to level out low spots and they end up with a shiny mess that looks worse than the original pothole. not saying you're wrong, just saying a torch can go sideways real fast if you don't know what you're doing with it.
