The crack that fought back for 3 straight evenings
That big zigzag crack near my garage apron looked simple enough. I cleaned it out, stuffed in the backer rod, and spread the self-leveling filler like the bag said. By morning it had sunk half an inch in the middle, so I topped it off again. Third time I let it cure a full day before checking, and it still dipped. Turns out the crack was wider underneath than the surface, so I finally packed in crushed stone first and then did one solid pour. Has anyone else hit a hidden void like that and had to change the whole approach mid-job?

Half an inch of sink on a self-leveling pour is normal, not some hidden cave under your driveway. That stuff shrinks as it cures and the bag mix is thin, so a wide crack will dip unless you build it up in thin lifts or mix it stiffer with sand. Three evenings on one crack near an apron sounds like a lot of work for something a tube of caulk and some sand would have handled. Crushed stone first is fine, but unless you were losing a whole bucket of filler down there, it was probably just normal settling.
