Cold patch vs hot mix for winter cracks - which side are you on?

Last month I patched a 6 foot crack in my driveway with cold patch from Lowe's and it was gone after the first freeze. My neighbor says I should have used hot mix even though it's a pain to work with. He's been doing his own driveway for 20 years and swears hot mix lasts 3 times longer. But cold patch took me 15 minutes and I didn't need a torch or special tools. I'm trying to decide if I should redo it now or wait and see if it holds through spring. Anyone else have strong feelings about which one actually works?

Hot mix is definitely the better stuff for longevity no question there. My buddy used it on his parents' driveway and it held up through two rough winters while my cold patch job was already crumbling by January.
