Vent: watched a guy at the Rockford swap meet brace a shelf with drywall screws and it made me rethink my own joints
I was at the Rockford swap meet two Saturdays back and watched a fellow sell a bookshelf he had braced with nothing but drywall screws into pine. Half the crowd said it was fine for the money, the other half said it would sag inside a month. It got me thinking about my own builds, since I have used pocket screws and glue on every shelf for a while now without really testing which holds better. So where do you all land, is a screw and glue joint actually stronger than a dado, or am I just repeating what I read somewhere? I would like to hear from folks who have torn apart their own old work.
repeating what I read somewhere" is probably right, honestly. A well fit dado beats screws and glue in shear every time, but most folks never test it so they just pass along the same line.
