My framing layout went from OK to dead on after I stopped using a tape measure for everything

I was out on a job in Spokane last spring, framing up a small addition, and I kept having these little gaps adding up. Maybe an eighth here, a sixteenth there. Nothing crazy but it was eating my lunch by the time I got to the second floor. Then this old carpenter named Tom who was subbing on the same site walked over and handed me a story pole he'd made from a scrap 2x4. No tape measure, no pencil marks, just notches cut with a hand saw. I used it for the stud layout and everything lined up perfect. First time I realized my eyes and a tape are way less reliable than a physical stick with cuts. Now I make a pole for every wall layout before I even pull lumber. Has anyone else ditched the tape for things like stair stringers or rafter spans?

That old carpenter named Tom walked over and handed me a story pole" - man, that line hit home. I had a similar moment maybe ten years back when this old timer showed me how he does stair stringers with just a framing square and a piece of plywood cut to the exact tread and riser. No measuring, just marking. Once you realize most of your tape measure errors come from that split second of eyeballing the hook or the little bit of wiggle when you're reaching across a long span, it's hard to go back to doing it the old way. I've actually started cutting my story poles a hair long and then shaving them down on site with a block plane until they fit perfect in the actual space. That way you're working off a real physical thing that can't lie to you, not some number in your head. For rafters especially, I think people get too hung up on the math. A good pattern rafter cut from a scrap piece of 2x6 and then used to mark the whole set will beat a calculator and tape any day. The wood itself just tells you where to cut.

Read an old woodworking book from the 1800s once where the guy said a good carpenter can measure with his eye better than any tool. That stuck with me. Story poles are just that, a way to let your eye and the wood talk to each other instead of fighting with a tape measure.
