Showerthought: Used to spray my chain with WD-40 every ride, switched to actual lube 5 months ago, and now I'm not sure which one was right
I rode for about 2 years spraying my chain with WD-40 after every single ride, like clockwork, and my drivetrain was loud but never really failed me. Then 5 months ago I bought a $9 bottle of actual chain lube and started using that instead, and the noise dropped a ton and shifting got smoother. But here is the thing, I'm cleaning my chain way more now, like every 2 rides instead of once a month, and one guy at my local shop in Fresno told me WD-40 is fine if you wipe it down good and reapply, he has been doing it for 15 years on the same cassette. Other side of it, my buddy swears WD-40 just attracts grit and grinds your chain into dust, and he replaces his chain every 1500 miles like a religion. I have not replaced anything in 5 months and honestly I can't tell if the smooth shifting is from the lube or from me just being more careful. So what is the real deal here, is WD-40 actually fine or am I just getting lucky, and did anyone else switch and notice a real difference or was it all in your head?
