I actually looked up how much torque a cassette lockring needs and it made me mad

Ngl I always just cranked my cassette lockring as tight as I could with a big wrench and called it done. Then I actually read the Park Tool spec sheet last weekend and it says 40 Nm max. That's barely more than hand tight with a decent tool. I tested my old installs with a torque wrench and I was hitting 60+ Nm on some of them. Apparently overtightening can warp the freehub body or strip the aluminum threads on nicer hubs. Honest to god I had no idea there was even a recommended number. Has anyone else been overtorquing this stuff for years without realizing it?

40 Nm is basically a firm handshake with a wrench, not the gorilla grip I've been using for a decade. Guess I've been treating my freehub body like a jar of pickles that just won't open. Might explain why my last hub started making that sad grinding noise.

40 Nm huh... I'm guilty of the same thing, just cranked it down till it felt solid.
