A flat tire on the Katy Trail taught me to stop guessing at patch kits
I got a flat 8 miles from the trailhead in Rocheport and the patch I slapped on popped off in under 5 minutes because I never let the glue get tacky. A guy named Ray rolled up with a $6 tube of rubber cement and showed me that you have to wait about 3 minutes for it to dry before pressing the patch on. Now I keep the glue in my bag but I still rush it sometimes, does anyone actually time it or do you just go by feel?
You know that glue actually goes bad after a while in your bag? I had a tube sit in my saddle bag through a whole summer and it turned into this thick gunk that never got tacky no matter how long I waited. Now I check it before every long ride and swap it out every few months. Going by feel works fine but timing it with your phone once or twice helps you learn what tacky actually looks like. Once you know that, you don't need a timer anymore.
