Old timer at the shop said my torque wrench was lying to me, he wasn't wrong
I was at the shop in Bakersfield on Tuesday swapping out injectors on a 6.7 Cummins, and this guy named Ray who's been turning wrenches for 40 years walked by and asked if I'd checked my clicker against a beam. I said nah, it's a good one, cost me $180. He just laughed and handed me his old beam wrench. Sure enough, mine clicked at 90 ft lbs when the beam showed 82. That's a 9 percent swing. He said clickers go soft if you leave them set to a load in the box, and I've been guilty of that for 3 years. So now I'm second guessing every head bolt I've torqued in the past 6 months. I ran the beam on two more clickers in the shop and both were off, one by 14 lbs. Anyone else keep a beam around just to check the clickers, or am I late to this party?
