That time I caught my neighbor digging holes in his backyard at 2am

I live in Austin and couldn't sleep last Tuesday, so I looked out my window around 2am. My neighbor Gary was out there with a shovel, digging holes in a grid pattern across his whole yard. He had a headlamp on and was measuring each spot with a tape measure before digging. Next morning all the holes were filled in and he had sod laid down like nothing happened. Has anyone else dealt with a neighbor doing weird landscaping stuff in the dead of night?

It reminded me of something I read online about people burying stuff to mess with property values or hide evidence. I forget where I saw it but someone was talking about neighbors burying things like old tires or trash to avoid paying dump fees. Gary sounds like he was either trying to hide something or maybe he was just having a really bad bout of insomnia and decided to get ahead on gardening. Still pretty weird that he had sod ready to go the next morning, like he planned the whole thing out.
