Switched from detailed character sheets to just rough notes for my last story

I spent 6 years filling out these big character profiles with backstories and quirks for every person in my novel. Last month I tried writing a short story with just a few notes on personality and voice instead. The difference was night and day - the characters felt more alive and I actually finished the draft in 3 weeks instead of 6 months. Has anyone else dropped the heavy prep work and saw their writing improve?

6 years of profiles and you still had to rewrite the entire thing, right?
