My old foreman told me to always check the wind direction before a big lift, and I thought he was just being extra careful. Then last Tuesday on the downtown job, a gust caught the load sideways and I almost had a real bad day.

Man, that's terrifying. Those old timers really do know their stuff, don't they? It's crazy how one little piece of advice can be the difference between a normal day and a disaster. I bet you won't skip checking the wind again. What did your foreman say when you told him what happened?

Actually told him the whole story over coffee. He just nodded and said that's why we keep the old guys around even after they retire. Made me buy the next round for the crew as a reminder.

Yeah, that's the kind of lesson that sticks. I've seen guys write that stuff right on their hard hat for a week after a close call like @murphy.wyatt had. It makes the rule real instead of just words on a paper. You don't forget it.
