Found out a 500 sq ft slab needs about 8 gallons of water per yard, and I'd been guessing for 6 years
I was reading through an old ACI write-up while waiting on a pour to set in Phoenix and saw that a typical 6 sack mix only wants around 6 to 8 gallons per yard, not the buckets I'd been sloshing in by feel. I ran the math on a 500 sq ft driveway last week and realized I was adding almost 3 extra gallons per yard, which is a big jump on the water-cement ratio. Does anyone here actually measure water by the gallon on residential work, or is everyone still just eyeballing it off the slump?
Man, I gotta disagree here, most residential crews I know are adding water for workability on purpose, not because they don't know any better. That 6 to 8 gallons is fine on paper, but on a hot Phoenix pour you'd be fighting a mix that sets up before you can even get it off the chute.
