Working at the college tech center made me stop telling people to restart their computers first
A student came in last week with a laptop that wouldn't boot, and the senior tech on duty just said 'did you try turning it off and on again' without even looking at it. I actually opened it up, found a swollen battery pressing on the motherboard. I think we rely on that restart line too much and miss real problems. How do you balance quick fixes with proper troubleshooting?

Sounds like that senior tech's troubleshooting guide is just a sticky note that says "restart it.

The restart advice is still good, but you have to actually check the machine first.
