Starting to think endpoint protection suites are overkill for small shops

I was talking to a guy at a local repair meetup in Denver last Tuesday who runs his own one-man IT gig, and he told me he ditched his fancy McAfee endpoint software for just Windows Defender and strict user permissions. He said he hasn't had a single breach in three years and saved over $400 a year on licensing. Am I wrong for thinking most small businesses don't need those expensive suites?

Right, because nothing says "small business savings" like paying for software that does the same thing as the free one (Windows Defender, anyone?). Gotta love burning money for a fancy logo.

Funny how paying for things sometimes just means paying for things.
