The old loaner belt sander at our church tool library finally died after 15 years

It was at our annual tool swap at First Methodist last fall when Pat from the hardware store showed me how to maintain the new one with just a little oil and a brush, and now I check every tool before it goes out. Has anyone else had a long-standing piece of gear give out and had to adjust how you run your library?

Read somewhere that the key to making those loaner tools last is keeping a log of who borrowed what and how long they had it... helps spot patterns before things break down completely. Had a buddy who ran a similar library and he swore by doing a quick once-over on every return, catching little issues before they got big. The brush and oil tip sounds solid, bet it keeps the dust from eating the bearings over time. Getting the community involved like that really makes the difference between a tool dying quick and getting years more out of it.

Right on. That log idea saved my buddy's whole setup too.
