Shoutout to the guy at our library orientation who asked about insurance
Was at the community tool library orientation last Tuesday over at the old firehouse on Elm Street, and this older guy raised his hand and asked straight up if we're covered if a drill catches fire while someone's using it. Nobody else had even thought about liability. Made me realize we need to get some real answers written down before we start lending out the big saws. Anyone here deal with insurance for your library setup?

Man that is such a good point. I was at our orientation too and nobody even thought about what happens when something actually breaks or catches fire. Our group just assumed the library would cover it but nobody asked the hard questions. We ended up having to call three different insurance places before we found one that would even talk to us about covering a bunch of random power tools that patrons are taking home. The first two just laughed and hung up, like sorry for trying to be responsible. Insurance is a total maze but you definitely need it before you hand out a table saw to someone who's never used one before.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I feel like people overthink the whole liability thing when half the time nothing ever happens anyway. Has anyone actually heard of a library getting sued over a loaner power tool?
