My neighbor insisted I had to use a specific brand of lawn feed, but it just killed my grass in two weeks.
He said 'Scotts Turf Builder is the only thing that works' and now I've got a $40 bag of stuff and a big brown patch, so what's the best way to actually fix this mess?

Oh man, I feel your pain. My peace lily did the exact same droopy thing last month. I gave it a good soak in the sink and it perked up in a few hours.
