My brother told me to ignore the 'always respond within 24 hours' rule for our neighborhood watch group.

He said it makes people think you're too available and they'll ask for more. So I waited three days to reply to a message about a broken streetlight. By the time I got back to them, someone else had already called the city and fixed it. The person who messaged me was pretty upset I didn't help sooner. Now I'm wondering if that advice is good for every community or just some.

My uncle tried that with his book club and they just stopped inviting him.

Tbh waiting three days for a neighborhood watch thing seems too long. It's not like a casual group chat, people are counting on you for real issues. Your brother's advice might work for some social stuff, but it backfired here because it was an actual problem that needed fixing.
