Found out my espresso beans are older than I thought from a roast date sticker
I was cleaning out my cabinet last night and noticed a bag of beans I bought 4 months ago from a local roaster in Austin... the roast date said they were actually 6 months old when I bought them. That means I've been drinking coffee that's almost a year old and thinking it tasted fine. Has anyone else checked their roast dates and been surprised how old the beans really are?

Read a food science blog that said coffee beans are best within 30 days of roasting, after that they just lose all the oils and flavor. Sounds like your shop is pulling one over on people like that Fort Worth place did. Makes me want to check every bag I buy now before I even get to the register.

After I moved to Texas I started buying beans from this little shop in Fort Worth. I always went for the dark roast because I figured that meant they were fresher somehow. Turns out dark roasting is a good way to hide old beans. One day I bought a bag and the roast date was seven months prior. I took it back and the guy behind the counter just shrugged and said "most people can't tell the difference anyway." That really rubbed me the wrong way. Now I always ask to see the bag before they ring it up. Its a small thing but it makes a difference.
