The new guy asked why we still indicate vises in, and it got me thinking about the old days
Last Tuesday this kid we hired fresh out of tech school watched me sweep a Kurt vise in with a dial test indicator and asked why I don't just bolt it down and go. I told him I spent my first two years on a Bridgeport in a shop outside Cleveland where the old timers made me indicate everything twice, and if I skipped it the setup guy would make me pull the part and start over. These new machines hold tenths right out of the box, so I get why he thinks it's a waste of ten minutes. Still, I caught myself checking the vise on a quick job last week out of habit, and it was off by three thousandths. Do you guys still indicate on every setup, or is that just how us older operators were trained?
