An old hand at the shop floor told me to trust the machine's hum more than the readout
I was dialing in a tight tolerance on a Haas VF-2 back in 2019 and he just walked over, listened for a second, and told me the spindle sounds like it's fighting the feed rate. He was spot on, and I still catch myself doing the same thing now - anyone else tune by ear more than they'd admit?

Wait, you really think your ears can beat a calibrated readout every time? I gotta push back on that one. In my experience, the machine's hum can tell you something is off for sure, but it's not reliable enough to trust over the numbers. I've seen guys swear the sound was wrong when really the tool was just getting dull or the coolant was low, stuff the ears can't pinpoint. Even if the hum sounds smooth, you could be a couple thou off and not hear a thing until the part's scrap. Your mileage may vary, but I've run into more trouble trusting my gut than trusting the DRO.

Have you ever actually had a DRO save a part that your ears missed? I'm just asking because I've been on both sides of this fence and my gut has caught more problems than the readout ever did.
