My neighbor said I should skip the solar panels and just get a heat pump

He argued that a heat pump would cut my gas bill by about 60% and was a better first step than solar. I went ahead and got a Mitsubishi unit installed last fall. My heating costs did drop a lot, but now I'm seeing my electric use spike and wish I had the solar to offset it. It feels like I solved one problem but made another one bigger. Has anyone else done the heat pump first and regretted not doing solar at the same time?

Man, that's rough. So your gas bill went down but the power company loves you now. @the_jenny has a point about just moving the cost around. Did you get a quote for solar before you decided on just the heat pump, or did you take your neighbor's word for it and jump right in?

You said your heating costs "dropped a lot" but now have an electric spike. That sounds like the heat pump just moved the bill from one company to another without solving the real problem. Getting both at the same time seems like the only way to actually save money.
