My $30 rain barrel turned into a mosquito nursery in 3 weeks

Bought a cheap 50-gallon barrel off Facebook Marketplace and set it up under my downspout in Portland. I forgot to cover the top, and by week 3 it was a buzzing larvae soup. Anyone else run into this, or do you use a screen or add some kind of treatment to keep it clean?
