I always washed my favorite mug with dish soap until a coffee shop owner told me I was ruining the seasoning
I had this old ceramic mug with a nice chip on the rim that I used for my morning coffee on the road. A barista in Flagstaff saw me scrubbing it with Dawn and said the soap was breaking down the patina that made my coffee taste better. Has anyone else noticed a difference after switching to just rinsing with hot water?

My neighbor Jim had a cast iron skillet his grandma handed down and he used steel wool on it once. His whole family still brings it up at reunions like he committed a crime or something. I just rinse my mug with hot water now and honestly cant tell if the coffee tastes different or if I'm just pretending to be fancy.

Keep scrubbing it with steel wool and see if it grows back better. I've never met a pan that couldn't survive a little abuse, just re-season it and move on.
