Warning: I saw a crew in my town using a standard shop vac for creosote cleanup yesterday.

The fine dust from that stuff will ruin the motor fast, so you need a HEPA-rated vac with a sealed system, like the Nilfisk Attix 30 I bought after mine died.

Man, people forget the dust gets everywhere else too, like in your car or house if you're not careful. I tracked that fine powder into my garage once and my wife's allergies went nuts for a week. It's not just about killing the vac, it's a legit health mess you bring home with you.

That Nilfisk Attix is a solid choice. I burned through two cheap vacs in a single season before I wised up. The real killer is that fine powder gets past every filter and just grinds the bearings to dust. Now I won't touch a chimney job without a vac that's officially rated for hazardous dust, it's just not worth the risk or the cost of replacing tools.
