Bought a $40 instant read thermometer and it saved my beef wellington

Picked up a Thermapen clone on Amazon after ruining three ribeyes guessing doneness. Nailed the 125F internal temp on a whole tenderloin last Saturday for a 12-top. Anyone else finally break down and buy one after burning money on overcooked meat?

Still chuckling at myself for the three prime ribeyes I turned into hockey pucks before wising up. The wife still brings it up at dinner parties (you know, the expensive kind where I'm not invited to cook anymore). Finally grabbed a cheap instant read that beeps when it hits temp and now I get to act like I actually know what I'm doing in the kitchen. Definitely worth the $40 just to stop the shame spiral of slicing into another overdone piece of beef and pretending it's intentional.

That thing about "pretending it's intentional" really got me, because I feel like that's half of adulting right there. You learn one trick and suddenly you're a genius, but really you just found the right tool to stop messing up the basics. I've noticed that pattern everywhere, from cooking to car maintenance to parenting. People act like they have it all figured out, but usually they just got burned a few times and quietly bought a better thermometer. Your wife will probably bring up the hockey puck story for another few years, but at least you've got your $40 beep machine to keep the streak going.
