My old skillet cracked while searing a steak last night

Had a 12 inch Lodge pan I've been using for about 10 years. Was heating it up on high to sear a ribeye and heard this loud ping sound. Looked down and there was a hairline crack running from the edge right into the center. I think the temperature changed too fast since I went straight from the fridge. Anyone ever had a pan crack like that or did I just get a dud?

Lodge pans aren't supposed to just give up on you like that... guess yours took “crackling hot” a little too literally. Ten years is a solid run though, maybe it just decided to retire early instead of waiting for the warranty to run out. Time to go shopping for a new one, I suppose.

@harperb46 my buddy Carl once left a cast iron in the oven on self-clean and it came out looking like a potato chip.
