Overheard a tile guy talking about his laser level at lunch yesterday

I was grabbing a sandwich and heard this tile installer bragging about his rotary laser, saying it cut his layout time in half. Made me think about how I still use a chalk line and square for most of my carpet seams and patterns. Any of you guys use a laser for carpet layouts, or is that overkill for our side of the trade?

Funny you mention that... my buddy down at the supply house tried using a rotary laser for his carpet layouts last year. He spent like two hours setting the thing up, leveling the tripod on that bouncy subfloor, and then the laser kept drifting cause of all the dust in the room. Said he finally just chucked it back in his truck and grabbed his chalk box like usual. For us, a good straight chalk line and a sharp square just work faster, especially when you're crawling around knee pads anyway. Might be different if you're doing huge commercial halls with zero pattern breaks, but for houses? Seems like fancy overkill to me.
