Got stuck for hours on a weird seam in a 1970s house

The old carpet was glued directly to the slab with this black mastic that just would not let go. What should have been a quick tear-out and prep turned into a full 8-hour day of scraping and grinding. Anyone else run into that nasty old adhesive?

What's worse, the glue or the lack of insulation? You're basically living in a basement with extra steps. It's a permanent chill you can't fix.
