A customer's homemade pie still sticks in my mind
Years ago, I was installing carpet in a farmhouse. The owner brought out a fresh apple pie she just baked. We took a break and ate a slice together, talking about her family. Back then, job sites felt more like visiting friends. Now, it's all business, and I think something special is lost.

That shift from personal connection to pure transaction is everywhere now. Grocery stores have self-checkouts to avoid talking, and customer service is just a menu of prompts. We've made things faster by removing the human parts, but the trade-off is a colder daily life.

Did I tell you about my friend's customer service nightmare? He called about a broken product and got stuck in a loop of menu options. After twenty minutes, he just hung up, feeling totally ignored.
