Warning: A deck job in Tacoma last month went from a mess to a win

The client wanted a full rebuild but the old ledger was bolted into rotted sheathing... it was a real headache. My helper found a hidden joist hanger from the 80s that gave us a solid point to sister new framing onto. We ended up using almost 50 feet of pressure-treated 2x8 to tie it all back to the house properly. That one find saved the day and kept us from having to reframe the whole wall. Has anyone else had a job saved by finding some old, solid hardware buried in a wall?

Man, that's a crazy save! So when you found that old hanger, was it completely hidden behind siding or sheathing? I'm trying to picture how you even spotted it. Did you have to pull off a bunch of layers, or was it just dumb luck while you were clearing out the rotten stuff? Finding something that solid from that long ago must have felt like winning the lottery.

That old hanger was just sitting there under one rotten board, pure luck.
