My chisel handles kept splitting until I started making my own from ash

I used to buy those mass produced beech handles and they'd crack after a few hard whacks, especially during winter in Denver. Last month I turned a few from a scrap ash board I had lying around, shaped them with a spokeshave, and they've held up through two full jobs without a single split. Has anyone else switched to handmade handles, or am I just overthinking this?
