Why does nobody talk about the hidden costs of entry level remote jobs

I took a customer service gig last year with a company based in Chicago that paid $15 an hour. Figured it would be easy money from home but nobody mentioned you need your own internet that's fast enough for their phone system. Mine kept dropping calls and they threatened to fire me after three warnings. Spent $80 on a better router and another $40 on a wired connection to my desk. Then they required a quiet space with no background noise which meant I couldn't work in my living room with roommates around. Ended up renting a tiny coworking space for $150 a month just to keep the job. By my third month I was making less than minimum wage after all the expenses. Has anyone else run into surprise costs like this with remote work?

Hold on, are we sure this is that big of a deal? I mean, haven't people always had to figure out commute costs or buying work clothes for an office job?
