Just realized asking for a $5,000 raise got me a promotion I didn't want

I prepped for months, gathered data on my extra projects, and asked my boss for a raise during my review in March. Instead of more money, they offered me a 'lead' role with way more responsibility and only a $1,500 bump. Has anyone else had a raise request totally backfire into a worse deal?

Been there! I'd go back and clearly say the new role's pay doesn't match the extra work they're asking for.

That's a classic move from the management playbook. Read an article once that called it a "title promotion," where they give you more work and a fancy new name instead of actual money. Your experience lines up perfectly with that idea. It feels like they're banking on you being too polite or too excited about the title to push back on the pay. Honestly, it can put you in a really tough spot to say no without seeming like you're not a team player.
