Unpopular opinion: I stopped using a ground tarp under my tent and my setup is better
Honestly, everyone says you need a footprint to protect your tent floor. I used one for years until a trip in the White Mountains last fall where I forgot mine. I was on a rocky site and just cleared it really well. Not only did my tent stay dry, but it was way easier to pack up without that extra wet sheet. I've done this for 8 trips now and haven't had a single puncture. Am I just getting lucky, or has anyone else tried skipping the footprint on purpose?

Yeah, I ditched mine a few seasons back for the same reason... that wet plastic sheet was just a pain. The key is really checking the site, like you said. I sweep away all the little sticks and pine cones, and I make sure there's no sharp rocks poking up. My tent floor is still fine after a ton of nights out. Feels like one less thing to buy and pack, honestly.

Totally! I've even started using a small brush to sweep the site clean, makes it even easier.
