Pro tip: Rethink your stove choice after a windy day at the riverbank

I used to prefer ultralight camping stoves (you know, the tiny ones) for how easy they are to carry. But after seeing a few tip over in strong winds at our local riverside spot, I now use a heavier, steadier one. Has local weather ever made you swap out a piece of gear?

Yeah, that's a solid point about stability, but it's not just the weight that fixes it. I had a similar wake-up call, but I stuck with a light stove. The trick is finding one with a wider base or better pot supports, not just a heavier one. My little Soto Windmaster might weigh nothing, but it sits way more solid in a gust than my old heavier one ever did. It's more about the design than the number on the scale. I'd hate to go back to carrying all that extra metal just for a false sense of security.

A friend's light stove stayed put with a wider base.
