My tent pole snapped on a windy night in the Gifford Pinchot

Was out near Mount Adams last weekend, just a simple overnight trip. The wind picked up around midnight, real strong gusts coming off the ridge. Heard a sharp crack and the whole side of my tent sagged in. One of the main fiberglass poles on my 3-person dome tent had broken clean through a section. Had to scramble out in the dark with my headlamp, use some duct tape and a section of a broken tent stake as a splint to get it to hold for the rest of the night. It was a mess. The pole was only about 18 months old, and I've been pretty careful with it. Has anyone else had a pole fail like that? Looking for a more durable 3-season tent now, maybe aluminum poles.

My buddy watched his tent fold like a cheap lawn chair in the Winds.

Ouch, @viola171, that sounds rough. Was your buddy camped above treeline when that wind hit? What kind of tent did he have that gave out like that?
