I used to pack a whole separate tent just for my gear, which was a huge pain.

For years, I'd bring my main tent and a cheap, old two-person one just to keep my pack and boots dry. It added weight and took forever to set up. Last fall on a trip near Bend, it poured for two straight days and I realized how dumb it was to manage two shelters. Now I just use a simple 10x10 foot tarp with some paracord to make a quick gear shed right next to my tent. Anyone have a better tarp setup they like for wet weather?

Ever try a diamond pitch with that tarp? I found it sheds wind way better than a basic lean-to when the rain gets sideways... just stake out two corners and tie the high point to a tree. Lets you stash gear on one side and still have a dry spot to cook under the other.

That tarp idea is a total game changer for wet trips.
