Down sleeping bags failed me in the rain. Synthetic is my new go-to.

My pricey down bag got wet on a coastal trek. It clumped up and offered no warmth. I swapped it for a budget synthetic bag. This one stays effective even when damp.

That shake it out trick only goes so far. I agree down can work if you baby it, but that's the whole point. On a long, damp trip you can't always stop to carefully dry and fluff it. My synthetic bag just handles the moisture without any fuss, so I can focus on the hike instead of gear care. It's about picking the right tool for the conditions you actually face.

My down bag has survived dozens of wet trips though.

Isn't it cool how tough down can be? I've had my down bag for years, and it's been through some heavy rain. Even when it gets wet, it still keeps me warm after I shake it out. People always say down is bad for wet weather, but mine has never let me down. It just needs good care and a solid stuff sack.
