Why does nobody talk about buying a $140 tone tester before a big apartment job
I used to think a tone tester was overkill and I'd just wing it with the cheap one from the supply house. Then I took a 6 building gig in Sacramento last month and spent almost 3 hours chasing a dead line that kept bouncing between units. I finally dropped $140 on a good tester with a built in amplifier and it found the same line in about 4 minutes. That one find paid for the tool on the spot since I was billing hourly. My old tester is now a paperweight in the truck. Has anyone else switched and noticed the cheap ones just lie to you on long runs?
Man, I feel that pain. I did the same thing on a 4 story walk up in Portland, kept getting a ghost reading two floors down and burned half a day on it. The cheap buzzers just bleed signal on anything over 50 feet so you end up second guessing yourself. Dropped the money on a better one after that and it was night and day on the long runs.
