Update: count of 214 inventory bins finally matches the spreadsheet at our Charlotte warehouse
Walked through with a clipboard for 3 hours on Tuesday and found the five missing items were all sitting in the wrong aisle, so my question is, does anyone else do a full physical count quarterly or just spot checks?

The five bins being in the wrong aisle is actually pretty common, but it's worth knowing that a full count and a spot check find different problems. A spot check tells you if the pickers are pulling the right stuff day to day, while a full count is the only way to catch stuff that got put away in the wrong spot weeks ago and nobody noticed. I ran a 300 bin section in Greensboro for two years and we did spot checks every week plus a full count once a quarter, and the quarterly one always turned up at least a few strays in the wrong aisle just like yours. The tricky part is that fixing the count doesn't fix the reason the bins ended up there, so it helps to look at who put them away and when. If the same aisles keep coming up short every quarter, that's usually a sign the labeling or the layout is the real issue, not the counting.
