PSA: A hostel manager told me I was booking wrong and saved me $200

I always booked through third party sites and she said the hostel gets way less money that way so they give the worst rooms. She showed me their direct booking rate was $15 cheaper a night plus free breakfast. Has anyone else found better deals calling places direct?

Oh wow, that's such a good tip! I've had similar experiences where calling the hostel or hotel direct got me a way better rate and a nicer room. Third party sites take a big cut, so places basically have to give you the leftover rooms to make up for it, which totally stinks. Plus, they always add on those sneaky "service fees" that aren't even necessary. I always check the direct booking rate now before I click buy anywhere else, it's saved me a good chunk of change more than once. The free breakfast perk is a nice bonus too, especially when you're trying to save money on a trip.

Totally agree. Those third party sites add fees that are basically hidden robbery. Direct booking is the way to go for sure.
