Lost my emergency cash in a Bangkok hostel bathroom

I was in Bangkok last April staying at a 400 baht a night hostel near Khao San Road. I had stashed 2,000 baht in a ziplock bag taped behind the toilet tank in the shared bathroom. Figured it was a clever hiding spot. Then the maintenance guy came in to fix a leaky pipe while I was out grabbing street food. He found the bag and I'm pretty sure he pocketed it because it was gone when I got back. I had to survive on my credit card for three days which meant paying foreign transaction fees on everything. Ended up swallowing the loss and just hiding cash inside my pillowcase after that. Has anyone else had a hostel hiding spot backfire on them like that?

Oh man that totally blows! I had the exact same thing happen in a hostel in Ho Chi Minh except I hid my cash inside a rolled up sock stuffed in a corner of my backpack (thought I was being so smart). The cleaner must have found it while I was out because by the time I got back that sock was empty and sitting neatly on my pillow.

Did you check if the maintenance guy was actually on staff or just some random dude in a uniform?
