A hostel in Lisbon charged me for a towel I never got

Last spring I stayed at this budget hostel in Lisbon, the kind where you pay 12 euros a night and hope the bunk doesn't collapse. At check-in they handed me a key card and said towels were 2 euros extra, but the front desk guy never actually gave me one. I figured I'd just air dry, no big deal. On checkout they charged my card for the towel anyway, claiming I took it. I argued for 20 minutes, showed them my empty bag, and they refunded it, but now I take a photo of my room before I leave any hostel. Has anyone else fought a phantom charge at a budget place, or do I just look like a towel thief?

Happened to me in Rome with a missing key deposit, and the trick that actually worked was asking them to show me the CCTV footage on the spot. They dropped it right away. Ever tried that at reception?
