A cheap bus ticket in Prague almost cost me my whole trip

Honestly, I bought a 24-hour public transport pass for about 80 Czech koruna last spring, but I didn't know you had to validate it the first time you use it. A plainclothes checker fined me 800 koruna on the spot, which was more than my hostel for the night. Ngl, it ruined my budget for two days. Has anyone else had a run-in with ticket validators in Europe and know how to avoid it?
