Tried frozen veggie stir fry mix over fresh, honestly shocked at the savings
Been doing meal prep on Sundays for a few months now and always bought fresh peppers, broccoli, carrots etc from the store. Last week I grabbed a $1.89 bag of frozen stir fry veggies just to see. Cooked it up with some chicken thighs and rice. It took like 4 minutes less and tasted fine. I saved maybe $8 total that trip. Problem is the texture gets a bit mushy if you cook it too long. Anyone else switch to frozen for certain meals and keep fresh for others? Which ones are worth it?
Is saving eight bucks really worth eating mushy vegetables every week though? Frozen is cheaper and faster, sure, but the texture thing you mentioned is kind of the whole point of stir fry, right? Once broccoli and peppers go soft they just turn into sad wet blobs and no amount of sauce hides that. For soups, stews, or anything where stuff cooks down for a while, frozen makes total sense and I'd never argue against it there. But for stir fry specifically you're trading the best part of the dish (that crunch) just to save a few dollars, and to me that's a bad trade.
